Gary Michael

Gary Michael is a native of the Portland area and has been drawing since a very early age.  He studied art and architecture at the University of Oregon and Yale University, where he received a Master of Architecture degree.  As a principal in his own architectural firm from 1965 to 1998, he won numerous competitions and design awards.

Michael began to paint again in the early 70s.  He has worked in watercolors, colored pencil and oils, but since 1990 has concentrated on pastels and acrylics.

Favorite subjects are landscapes and historic architectural scenes.  He is attracted to landscapes with a strong or unique sense of place and attempts to convey to a viewer the beauty of natural and rural areas in the Northwest and around the world.

When he is not painting he most likely is playing his trumpet in one of several ensembles or traveling with his wife, former State Representative Carolyn Tomei.

Gary Michael's home and studio overlooks a beautiful stretch of the Willamette River and Elk Rock Island.
