Belas births Buildings: The Origins of Glassblowing and the Material’s Ever-growing Utility

The Mesopotamians discovered glass, a versatile material of liquid sand that is now one of the most commonly prevalent materials in our lives, shelters and goods. From the light bulb, to food containers, to the facades of architecture, inventors have manipulated the versatile yet fragile tool to fulfill a variety of purposes. The potential of glass, however, does not begin nor end at utility.

The invention of glassblowing in the first century B.C. in the Syro-Palestinian region created a remarkable change in the use and availability of glass objects. Previously, from the third millennium B.C., glass objects had been made using other techniques, such as casting in a mold or forming glass around a removable core. These methods were slow and labor-intensive; consequently, glass was made in relatively small quantities and was not widely available. Glassblowing—in which molten glass is gathered on the end of a blowpipe and a vessel is formed by inflation and manipulation with tools—enabled craftsmen to create vessels quickly and in a wide range of shapes, making glassware affordable and available. Gradually, glass replaced clay in many everyday household articles.

Roman historians describe what is now known as the Belus River in magical terms, with water flowing in and glass flowing out the other side. Representative of the broader treatment of the Palestinian land and people, this spiritual river is now dangerously polluted due to a weapons factory where the missiles used against Occupied Palestinian Territories and Lebanon are manufactured. Archeological surveys and spoken testimonies by Palestinians outline the historic use of this river by women, and its role in bathing, cleansing and healing rituals. Consequently, the relationship of where glass comes from, the sand itself, to the glass use afterwards is incredibly linked to the Palestinian body and to the Palestinian land. The production of glass, made from sand in furnaces made from mudbrick on the mineral-rich banks of the river, is tied to the earth and, through this defines a contemporary Palestinian identity tied to indigenous roots, and the oscillation between rootedness and displacement.

Following their initial invention, Syro-Palestinian glassmakers took the technique a step further by using molds that gave blown glass different designs. It didn't take long for glassmakers to craft molds with increasingly inventive and complicated shapes, resulting in mold-blown glass.

Once the Roman Empire caught word of the glassblowing technique, it boomed in the capital city. Craftsmen from the Middle East and North Africa perfected Roman techniques of glassblowing, for the sake of economic exchange. Trade with Arabia brought glassblowing to Venice, which gained a monopoly on glassmaking and glassblowing especially. In the late thirteenth century, the Italian government, intent on guarding Venice's glassblowing secrets, relocated the Venetian glassmakers to the island of Murano. However, some craftsmen fled Murano to expose glassblowing techniques to the rest of Europe.

The craft spread further with the republication in the late 1660s of L'Arte Vetraria, a glassmaking printed guide that alchemist and glassmaker Antonio Neri wrote in the early seventeenth century. In this book, Neri divulged the hard-kept secrets of Venetian glassmaking.

In May 1607, the Virginia Company of London established Jamestown, and it provided the resources to start a glasshouse there in 1608, the first attempt to establish glassmaking in the Americas. However, success evaded Jamestown as its foundation failed twice due to climatic and economic shifts, but the efforts laid the groundwork for a booming glassmaking industry. In 1739, with support from Quaker merchants and leaders, German colonist Caspar Wistar founded America's first successful glasshouse.

Until the late nineteenth century, no monumental changes emerged. Then, during the 1878 Paris Exhibition, where designers Eugene Rousseau and Emile Galle ushered in the Art Nouveau period, an art style that lasted until the first decade of the twentieth century and was characterized by organic, stylized forms that strayed away from sharpness and mechanical lines. Art Nouveau bled into Hollywood, as well as other visual or expressive art industries, and came to embrace glass as a medium and means of aesthetic.

In the 1960s, American glassmakers broke from factory environments to open independent studios, launching the studio glass movement. Harvey K. Littleton is highlighted among the pioneers of the movement. In the early 1960s, he collaborated with the Toledo Museum of Art and scientist Dominick Labino to make a small, affordable furnace for individual artists to use.

Presently, glass is indispensable to quotidian life regardless of one’s location in the globe. Modern architecture has been instrumental in mass production of concrete, glass and steel buildings in the intricate breathing organisms we call cities. This widespread use helped accommodate housing needs of the burgeoning middle class worldwide. Glass and steel construction have arguably become the symbol of refined construction and development under Euro-centric standards.
